Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
 | | | | Quote: 'Red' To Begin Shooting In January The film adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's “Red” will reportedly start shooting in January. According to Mania, principle photography will begin in Toronto before moving to Louisiana. Bruce Willis is attached to star as a retired CIA Agent who is targeted for assassination. Morgan Freeman is also signed for a currently unrevealed role. Earlier this summer, “Red” director Robert Schwentke exclusively told MTV News that the tone of the film would be much lighter than Ellis’ original story. “I love the script," Schwentke said. "It's very funny, which the comic book isn't. I like switching gears and this is a movie that allows me to do something lighthearted in tone and is also an action movie." At the time, Schwentke defended the change in tone as necessary due in part to the short length of the original three-issue miniseries. Mania is also reporting that screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber have expanded the story for the big screen; including the previously unexplored backstory of Willis’ character. While Ellis is not directly involved in the production of “Red”, he is taking a much more active role in the film adaptation of his ongoing series “Gravel”; which Ellis will write and produce for Legendary Pictures. | | | | |

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
Bullcrap explanation for changing the entire tone of the movie. It's too short so we gotta add some yuks! I love the idea of exploring Moses' past, this would be a great way to stretch the story out a bit more. Let's get some insight into what it is that freaks the new Director out, let's see an early mission (after seeing Benjamin Button you know they can easily do a young Bruce Willis), explore Moses' past failed relationships or the one that made him realize his chosen lifestyle would be too dangerous for him to love someone. All of these things can be respectful of the source material and still add to it.
You don't change the tone, feel, purpose of the story because of run-time.
Dangit man, I want this movie to be good. The source material deserves better.
Here's to Cully getting a big fat check for his trouble.

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
True, it won't be exactly what we did, but that doesn't mean it won't be good. Read Peter Benchley's Jaws sometime, and you'll see what I mean.

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
I get that it will possibly still be a good movie, heck, even one I really like. I just don't think it's going to really be RED though, that's the part that gets me. Heck I think the Hellboy movies are really good but they miss the mark of the comicbook by a mile, and I think that's a shame because I believe in the source material. I'm not saying every comicbook movie should be SIN CITY in it's slavish devotion to the source material (although I loved that movie) but it should still have the feel... the best example of this I think is The Crow or Dark Knight or The Incredibles (you know Waid/Ringo's FF).

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
Yup. Also, there's now a start date (Jan. 11), and a release date (Nov. 19). Wild, huh?

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
So, I'm getting a lot of questions. If anyone's interested: The RED FAQAlso, Hollywood Reporter is saying that Julian McMahon, Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox, and Ernest Freaking Borgnine have been added to the cast...!

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
Cully, they are laying down some serious cash on this cast! Amazing! I'm heartened. They must really believe in the project.
(I would have said Brian Cox was a good choice for the lead, btw. But, that would have been a different kind of movie.)

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
Weird thing is that Brian Cox was in ANOTHER movie called Red just a couple of years ago...!

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
Sorry I've been AWOL lately. A couple of cool things have been going on that I can tell you about: First, as of last Monday, principal photography on the film version of RED was underway. Today, Summit made it official with this press release. And I'm trying to nail down a set visit sometime over the next month or so, as is Warren, I noticed. It'd be nice if we could be up there at the same time, wouldn't it? Second, DETECTIVE COMICS has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Best Comic Book. Hearty congrats to Greg and J.H. (and to DC, for not only being brave enough to star not one, but two LGBT characters in their flagship book, and for really getting behind it).

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
I love it: | | | | Quote: Shooting Of “Red” So Realistic, Cops Calledby Rich Johnston, February 10, 2010 The movie Red, based on the Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner comic book is filming in Toronto right now. Starring the likes of Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfuss, all that. And, as those who’ve read the comic know, it’s a guns-a-blazing action adventure. A little bit too much action it seems. Because shooting last night in Toronto had a little too much, well, shooting for local residents liking. And both seeing and hearing gunplay on the Keele & Sheppard streets, an area that has suffered gang-related gun crime, several vigilant curtain twitchers called the cops. Who turned up, arrested Morgan Freeman and shipped him off to some off-the-books gulag. Well, obviously not. But that sounds quite a fun idea for a film too, doesn’t it? They did turn up with sirens blaring though, look at a few official documents, ate some on-set doughnuts, and left asking Bruce Willis to turn it down a little. Funny, that’s exactly what the director had just said moments before… | | | | |

Re: RED Headed To The Big Screen
That's incredibly cool. I'm really looking forward to this, even though I know it's going to be a departure from the comic. I'm actually pretty happy about that. All cred to Sin City, but isn't it a good thing to be willing to do something other than a point-by-point recreation of the original?
You need to get on set at some point, Cully.
